Driving support for shelter pets

A bill signed into law in July will allow Coloradans to show support for pets in shelters through their license plates. The new Adopt A Shelter Pet license plate will be available to pet lovers in January of 2011. It will help raise awareness about the 170,000 cats and dogs that were taken into Colorado animal shelters last year.

Adopt a Shelter Pet licenseSpecialty license plates cost drivers their annual license plate renewal fee plus $50, with $30 from each Adopt-A-Shelter plate going to the Colorado Pet Overpopulation fund. Money raised by license plate sales will provide grants for spay/neuter surgeries and medical care for cats and dogs in shelters throughout Colorado, with an emphasis on underserved areas of the state. Check out the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund to find out how to purchase a plate.

If you love pets, but already have a specialty plate, consider giving to the Colorado Pet Overpopulation fund via a donation online or using the check off on your state tax form.
